Ceramics is a course designed to expose students to a variety of cultures and traditional techniques. The study of ancient civilizations gives students an understanding of the discovery of clay and the origins of form and function.
Throughout the duration of the course students will create an Asian tea set with Wabi Sabi aesthetic, Native American inspired coil pots with sgraffito designs, Egyptian busts and Islamic reliquary boxes amongst other works. Students are encouraged to experiment with design, using the design cycle and a workbook to document research, planning and development of their pieces. This allows students to think more critically about the design and function of their work.
The course allows students to be exposed to a variety of hand building techniques including pinch, coil and slab methods. The ceramics I course is an introductory level course, which allows students to master traditional hand building techniques.
Ceramics I students will learn about the diversity of cultural expression through the scope of ceramics. They will be encouraged to practice tradition in their method and technical approach as they improve mastery of their media. Students will also learn about the importance of design and craftsmanship as integral aspects of assessment.
Ceramics II encourages students to explore more advanced technical approaches, a mastery of craftsmanship and the integration of individual creative expression. Key components of assessment are design, craftsmanship, creativity and technical competency.
A variety of forms of critique keep the ceramics studio a lively and interactive space. Students will have the opportunity to engage in peer and individual, as well as progress critiques. These critiques will give students the opportunity to evaluate the development of their work in all stages.
Exhibition is also a fundamental part of the ceramics course. Students are encouraged to display their work in a variety of exhibitions both locally and regionally. Scholastic art, Governor's Show and Congressional show are a few of the regional exhibitions students have an opportunity to exhibit in.
