ART I

Art I is the Prerequisite course for all incoming high school artists.  Students are exposed to a range of methods, technical approaches and theories in this foundations course.

The course is broken into four units.  Within each unit is several formative assignments along with summative projects to assess student comprehension.

Unit I explores observational drawing techniques.  Students will create a range of right brain drawings as they learn to improve their focus on perception.  Summative drawing assignments include an observational study of a hand and a still life study.

Unit II includes methods for drawing.  Students will explore 1 & 2 point perspective as well as grid drawing methods to improve accuracy in the development of space and proportion.  The summative assignment is a finished perspective study and a pastel grid drawing.

Unit III focuses on color.  Students will learn the fundamentals of the color wheel as well as color theory.  Summative assignments include monochromatic, polychromatic and watercolor paintings.

Lastly, unit IV connects students with principles of design.  Students will explore cut paper designs as well as mixed media and collage techniques.

A fundamental component of the course is the process journal.  A workbook that students will use to explore formative drawing assignments, record notes and observations, as well as completing written reflections.  The goal of the course is to prepare all students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed as visual artists.
